Alkaline degreasing

An alkaline degreaser is a powerful, water-based cleaning agent used to break down organic dirt on vehicles. Remove traffic film, pollen and insects!

An alkaline degreaser is a powerful, water-based cleaning agent used to break down organic dirt on vehicles. It's especially effective on traffic film, pollen, insect residue, bird droppings, mud and other everyday grime that clings to the paint. Thanks to its high pH level, it quickly dissolves contaminants and prepares the surface for a proper hand wash.

What's the difference between alkaline and cold degreasers?

One common question is when to use an alkaline degreaser versus a cold (solvent-based) one. The answer lies in the type of dirt you're trying to remove. Cold degreasers work best for oil-based residues like tar, asphalt, grease and road salt. In contrast, alkaline degreasers are designed to target organic buildup such as insects, pollen, dust and traffic grime.

Alkaline degreasers can be applied across the entire vehicle, whereas cold degreasers are typically used only on lower panels. Many detailing enthusiasts prefer to combine both: applying cold degreaser to the dirtiest areas first, then following up with alkaline degreaser for a complete pre-wash.

When should you use alkaline degreaser?

Alkaline degreaser is ideal for routine vehicle washing – especially during spring, summer and autumn when organic buildup is common. It's particularly effective for removing:

Using it as a pre-wash step reduces the risk of scratching your paint during hand washing, since it loosens and lifts the dirt before you touch the surface.

How to use alkaline degreaser – step by step

  1. Dilute properly: Mix the degreaser with water according to the instructions – usually between 5–15% depending on the level of contamination. Stronger mix for tougher jobs, weaker for regular maintenance.
  2. Apply to a dry vehicle: Spray the solution across the car from bottom to top. Always work in the shade or on a cool surface to prevent premature drying.
  3. Let it dwell: Allow it to sit for 5–10 minutes. Keep the surface wet – reapply if needed to avoid drying.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Use plenty of water, preferably a pressure washer, and rinse all surfaces from top to bottom.
  5. Follow up with shampoo: After rinsing, wash the car with your preferred car shampoo to remove any remaining residue and leave a spotless finish.
