BEST - A project for BSR.

Since 2005 BSR have participated in a large EU funded project called BEST (Bio Ethanol for Sustainable Transports) as representative from Seweden together with the environmental administration in Stockholm.

The project where many countries have participated is now in its final stages and several well known companies have contributed to the project. For instance both Saab and Ford have participated as well as Swedish SEKAB.

BSR was given the opportunity to participate as we have a large amount of experience using ethanol fuel, both in converting petrol engines and still pass all emission regulations but also because our influence in changing the legislation making it possible to convert vehicles from petrol use to ethanol use.
In the project, BSR have presented test results from three different vehicles where emission data as well as vehicle functionality tests are present. In parallel BSR have performed a diesel project together with SEKAB and Bio Fuel Region in Sweden.

As petrol prices are increasing rapidly, the interest for E85 is yet again high. In spite of the criticism, which in most cases has been poorly supported by hard facts and in many cases even full of errors, most impartial organisations conclude that using ethanol will substantially reduce the green house gases calculated from “well to wheel”, i.e. including all aspects from manufacturing through distribution and end use. What is often missed as well is that using ethanol, a substantial decrease in toxic hydrocarbons is achieved. Also, hazardous nitrogen oxides are reduced by as much as 50% and particles are virtually reduced to zero compared to petrol use.

Conversion kits are available here.
All documentation in the BEST project is available here where document D1.20 contains BSR results.
