Tuning
Acceleration - Acceleration improvement from engine tuning?Tuning will affect the vehicle's acceleration and performance depending on effect and increase of torque.
BSR has measured the acceleration and performance of several types of cars, before and after tuning. You will find this information on the website under each type of car.
We have chosen to show the difference calculated as a percentage since there may be a time difference depending on various aspects and on how the measurement is performed.
The intervals we have chosen to present will represent the most frequently used speed ranges for each gear where the effect of the tuning will be utilized.
Therefore we have chosen not to test 0-100 km/h which is rarely or never used for acceleration in real life.
Acceleration will, in general, increase with the same percentage as the average effect/torque increase for the current motor speed range.
This can be calculated by measuring the area under the effect/torque curve.

Acceleration, timekeepingBSR is using the most advanced GPS-based logging system available from RaceLogic in all acceleration performance measurements before and after tuning. The logging system has an accuracy of 0.1 km/h compared to actual speed which ensures that the results correlates extremely well with actual car performance.
All acceleration intervals are tested three times on level ground in both directions and an average value is calculated from the results. Full acceleration starts 10 km/h below the lower end of the interval and ends 10 km/h after the upper end. The interval 80-120 km/h for instance is evaluated through maximum acceleration from 70 km/h to 130 km/h and the acceleration time between 80 km/h and 120 km/h is recorded.
All tests are always performed using one gear only in an interval. This is to prevent any driver mistakes during gear changes.

Replacing components? Our programs have been thoroughly tested and are safe and accurate as long as all engine parts are in good condition and as long as only the engine related parts included in our different steps are used and combined.
Any kind of alteration of engine or components outside of these recommendations will mean that the BSR program is not adapted and we cannot guarantee durability or functionality in these cases.
If the engine has been modified the BSR guarantee will no longer be valid.

Used tuning programs – Using used chips and ECU's?To be able to install a used tuning program the original ECU number as well as the original chip number/label number must be absolutely identical as in the original application.
BSR would like to point out that it can be risky to install such a program/chip/ECU since the software may not be identical and this can cause problems.
Since it is very time consuming and expensive to check if the ECU really is identical it is not cost-effective for customers to let us exchange used ECU’s or resolder chips.
The PPC cannot be used in any other vehicle due to the anti theft system code.

Vehicle testing – What about vehicle tests?During the vehicle test performed by the Swedish Motor-Vehicle Inspection Co there is no inspection of the ECU.
Our tunings meet the requirements of European exhaust emissions regulations according to NEDC tests, as well as those of the Swedish Motor-Vehicle Inspection Co.
A BSR tuning will not cause any problems during vehicle testing at the Swedish Motor-Vehicle Inspection Co.

Diagnosis - can the garage perform diagnosis with BSR tuning? With a BSR tuning system in the car it is possible to perform a complete diagnosis and trouble shooting using the garage's equipment.
During trouble shooting the car can be returned to its original condition to establish whether the problem remains.

BSR diesel tuning vs. other tuning systemsDiesel tuning systems where only the amount of fuel is adjusted for increased power (so-called Plug in systems) can have a number of unwanted effects:
– Only increasing the amount of fuel can result in uncontrolled exhaust emission temperatures which can damage engine parts.
– Heavy exhaust fumes during acceleration when other parameters (such as turbo pressure) are not adapted to the increased amount of fuel. This results in increased exhaust emissions and diesel fumes that trouble others on the road.
¬
- Plug in systems can unfortunately give the same amount of power increase for all gears/stages which can cause unnecessary strain on the transmission and cause damages.
- Some features of the engine's diagnosis system can get disconnected.
- The engine warning light will go on which means that the emergency program is operating.
- The information for the trip computer is incorrect (since the distributor signals have been manipulated) resulting in incorrect display of fuel consumption.
- Plug in system will jeopardize particle filter regeneration (self cleaning) on vehicles equipped with these. This can have negative environment consequences.
- Promises of lower fuel consumption can give incorrect combustion.
- When installing plug in systems the wires sometimes have to be joined together in the engine resulting in contact/connection problems and visible joints.
BSR and PPC tunings will not have the above mentioned problems. See more information about our tuning systems.
Note: Environment
Particles - especially from diesel engines - are considered a great health hazard and can cause serious illnesses of the respiratory passages. More information about Nox, see Engine - Exhaust emissions.

Dump valve - Can I use another dump valve?A dump valve is a relief valve for the turbo. This valve will eliminate damaging boost pressure spikings from the system and there are two different kinds depending on engine construction. Vehicles equipped with air flow meters will have recirculating relief valves. Sometimes what is marketed as a dump valve is really an “open” relief valve releasing excess pressure directly into the air giving a more "sporty" sound during gear change.
BSR will advise against installing this on vehicles equipped with air flow meters/air mass meters.
The ECU will continuously perform calculations on fuel requirements in relation to air flow/air mass. An open so-called dump valve will release “measured air” and this will result in a richer fuel blend which will give poorer performance, functionality, durability and higher exhaust emissions during some motor speed intervals.
There is also a risk that this overly rich fuel blend is ignited after the combustion chamber and this may damage the catalytic converter or the turbo.
For vehicles equipped with air flow meters we therefore recommend keeping the original recirculating relief valve to ensure functionality and to avoid damages and operational disturbances.
An "open" dump valve can be installed on vehicles not equipped with air flow meters (for instance Saab with Trionic 5 ECU).

Peak power output and torqueTorque – or power on low rpm – is what you utilize when driving normally, overtaking etc. Peak power output is rarely used during the life span of a vehicle.
Unfortunately peak power output has become something used to determine the performance of a car, when in truth it is the area within the revolution range that will tell you how fast the car will accelerate within this range.
So, vehicles with the same peak power output can vary in acceleration if one has a wider and fuller power curve.
You should compare character and fullness of the power curves rather than just peak power output. If the vehicle is used in normal traffic the maximum torque is more important than peak power output.

Power increase - how much power increase can tuning give?Exact figures regarding power and torque increase can be found on the website under each car type, engine type and year. BSR has measured figures of power and torque before and after tuning of the same vehicle. For some vehicles there are even figures for acceleration changes for certain intervals calculated as percentages.
For more information on power increase, please see FAQ http://sv.bsrab.se/faq/108/
NORMAL ASPIRATED ENGINES
A BSR tuning for a normal aspirated engine (without a turbo) will in general give a power increase of 6-8% and a torque increase of 8-12%. With some engines the power/torque increase is even higher with a BSR tuning since the manufacturer has chosen to “throttle” the power for some engine types (for instance Volvo V/S series 140 compared to 170 hk).
For a normal aspirated engine ignition is optimized, and in some cases also fuel parameters.
The power is increased even further using sport air filters and full flow exhaust systems.
TURBO ENGINES
On a vehicle equipped with a turbo the turbo pressure can be gradually increased and with fuel and ignition optimization this will result in a pronounced power and torque increase of 20-50%.
For several types of vehicles there are different steps (Step 1-2-3 etc) of exhaust systems and “heavier” downpipes and sport catalytic converters which will enable further power and torque increase.
The range of the turbo engine is mainly controlled by the dimensions of the turbo. This means that if the engine has a so-called low pressure turbo it will have the maximum power and torque at a slightly lower rpm compared to a vehicle with a “full” turbo.
NASP/TURBO
The priority of BSR's tuning programs is power and torque in the speed range normally used and will give a power increase in ALL motor speeds and load situations compared to the original.
Since the software does not change when idling and driving at low speed the properties of these motor speeds will not change (under approximately 1 500 rpm).

Manufacturer warranty - What happens with this when the car is tuned? The warranty policies on cars are generally divided in two parts.
Manufacturer warranty
Most car manufacturers offer a warranty, typically for a period of two years on a new car. During this period any malfunctions will be handled free of charge. This does not include normal wear and the car must be serviced according to the manufacturers specifications.
Emssions warranty
The car manufacturer is obligated to offer a emissions warranty. This means that if any part of the engine affecting emissions is faulty, the manufacturer shall repair the car free of charge so that the emission levels return to normal.
This warranty is valid up to 80.000 kilometers or five years after purchasing a brand new car.
When tuning the car it is possible that the car manufacturer will deny any claims for these two warranties but this is usually only concerning parts that might be affected by the tuning.
Separate legislations apply when converting from for instance petrol to bio ethanol using BSR certified conversion kits.
As you tune your car, or convert it for different fuel usage, you can of course as a precaution sign up for the BSR warranty policy. This is however only available in Sweden, but many BSR dealers have similar policies for other contries.

Insurance - Will insurance conditions change when I tune my car?It is possible that the conditions for your insurance policy will change when you tune your car.
We recommend contacting your insurance company.
Our experience is that the conditions vary between different insurance companies.
You can also take out BSR’s unique Machine Insurance in connection with tuning.
BSR Machine Insurance is only available to the Swedish market at the moment.
More information about this can be found here.

Durability - Are the engine and car stable enough for a BSR tuning?Modern engines are very over dimensioned in regards to engine strength.
BSR has a great deal of knowledge and experience dimensioning torque and power so it will not endanger the engine’s durability or overload transmission. It is also very important that the torque is decreased during critical moments such as during gear change.
A BSR tuning will not endanger the engine and will not jeopardize durability or useful life. All our tuning kits have been thoroughly tested. BSR performs approximately 4 000 tunings each year without any problems.
Durability and useful life of the components depend on maintenance, service, driving methods etc.
If you are uncertain of the condition of the engine BSR or our retail dealers can perform trouble-shooting tests at basic fee.
If the car is newer than 4 years and has run less than 80 000 km we recommend you to take out BSR's Machine Insurance giving you extra security.
BSR Machine Insurance is only available to the Swedish market at the moment.

Individual adaptations - Can BSR perform this for all cars?Normally it is not useful to individually adapt the tuning program to each car.
If the engine and all components are in good condition the difference in power and torque are only marginal compared to the original design.
Our programs have been thoroughly tested in regards to all parameters in the original specifications and we do not feel that there are any reasons to adapt the tuning programs when the engines are completely accurate.
Should the engine or a component be faulty or if any settings are not up to standard specifications there could be a theoretical reason to map the program after these conditions. But we feel that this is starting at the wrong end and feel that the problem needs to be fixed before the tuning is performed.
During tuning and test driving, for instance checking turbo pressure, our technicians are very observant on finding possible problems not discovered by the owner or dealer’s garage. The customer will be informed of these problems and we will work together to sort them out.
It would be very unconstructive to adapt the tuning program after these incorrect conditions.
Measuring before and after tuning is in our opinion not the best way to prove our point.
If the customer is interested in documentation of the power of the car to ensure it performs according to specifications, BSR can perform a power measurement, but this is not included in the cost of the tuning.
The cost of this is about 1800SEK (depending on 2WD or Q and type of car) and will take a couple of extra hours to perform. This must be stated when booking the tuning. This can only be performed at BSR in Växjö
If you are uncertain of the condition of the engine BSR or our retail dealers can perform trouble-shooting tests at basic fee.

Car check-upA requirement for tuning is that the car is in good condition. If the car is faulty the problems must be sorted before the tuning is performed.
If you are uncertain of the condition of the engine BSR or our retail dealers can perform trouble-shooting tests.
This test includes diagnosis, turbo pressure tests (tubes, hoses, intercooler etc.). Our technicians are very observant on finding possible problems not discovered by the owner or dealer’s garage. The cost of this test is SEK1850:- with additional costs for repair work or exchange of spare parts. Before any measures are taken you will be contacted for consent.
The retail dealers/BSR Tuning marked with a box Technical support/Repair shop can generally perform this.
Please contact you nearest retail dealer.

Boost pressure - boost pressure after tuning?Boost pressure (turbo engines) is mostly determined by the ECU which regulates boost pressure according to a number of conditions such as:
- Present atmospheric pressure
- Air temperature
- Atmospheric humidity
- Fuel quality
- Load
- Software version
- etc
With the modern adaptive engine systems of today, boost pressure can vary depending on external conditions. Take for instance the Saab 9.5 Aero, where the boost pressure can vary between 0.8 to 1.4 bar to achieve the same torque. Due to this it can be difficult to determine the maximum boost pressure after tuning.
[ direct link ]
Mapping - Can BSR create a custom map for my car?Due to lack of time we cannot create so-called custom maps in addition to the programs (tuning kits) we market. It takes too long and is too costly to develop special programs.
Our programs are carefully tested and will work safely and accurately as long as all the engine parts are in good condition and when only using and combining the parts included in our different stages.
[ direct link ]
Mileage – Tune an engine with high mileage? It is the condition of the engine and the function of the components that determine if the car is a suitable tuning candidate.
In general, high mileage is not a problem.
A good garage can perform a thorough engine check-up and BSR can perfume a basic test to a fixed cost, with additional costs for repair work or exchange of spare parts.
A tuning can intensify previously undiscovered problems.
[ direct link ]
New car types - When will a tuning kit be available for my car? When new engine concepts are developed we are always very careful and we perform long-term tests to establish correct tuning levels, best drivability and durability.
This is to ensure the customer purchases a thoroughly tested product so we hope you will have some patience :-).
For instance, at the moment we are performing tests on VAG 2.0 FSI engine (turbo) where some of our project cars have been driven and tested with BSR tuning since last winter (2004-05).
The evaluation process for the new engine type of Saab 93SS took approximately 9-10 months before the program was ready to market.

Reregistration of tuned carsReregistration of vehicles is today basically impossible without the approval of the car manufacturer due to the so-called Whole Vehicle Type Approval, WVTA.
The legislation does allow reregistration as for instance an “enthusiast vehicle” if the owner takes on responsibility (for exhaust emission control etc.)
Please contact the Swedish Motor-Vehicle Inspection Co. for further information.
Since 1999 BSR has worked actively for changes of the legislation in these respects and the government has commented positively on this matter and will work to establish a certification system. BSR is influencing the authorities to change the legislation.
When it comes to conversion to other fuels, there is a chance to reregister the vehicle with a type approved conversion kit. BSR has developed this kind of conversion kits. More information at http://sv.bsr.se/e85/

Tuning & ServiceCar manufacturers usually have long service intervals, but in connection with tuning we recommend shorter intervals to ensure better functionality and a longer life for the engine.
Motor oil and oil filters must be exchanged regularly every 15 000 km. This is a requirement in the BSR Machine Guarantee.
Spark plugs must be exchanged every 15 000 km.
If a sport filter is installed this must be cleaned after 10 000 km or more often depending on season and amount of air particles (in highly polluted city areas). If the original filter is used this must be replaced after 20 000km or even sooner according to recommendation.
You should also check and clean the so-called coarse filter (leaf filter) in the air intake, before the air filter regularly especially during autumn when leaves can get trapped and limit the air intake for the engine.
[ direct link ]
Stage 3 tuning - Some parts for Stage 3 are installed! With BSR Step 3 tuning it is important to combine the correct product with each software.
BSR’s step-program was developed to fit only the BSR down pipes (with catalytic converters) BSR (Sport flow) exhaust systems and the other components that sometimes need exchanging for Step 3 tuning. (See more information about your car type on the website under Step 3).
If the car has a different down pipe or other components installed we cannot guarantee the functionality or the durability using the BSR Step 3 program.
Among other things, the counter pressure of the down pipe/catalytic converter/exhaust system can vary.
At the stages were we recommend other injectors, intake pipes etc the result can be devastating if incorrect components are used or if the program has not been adapted.
When exchanging down pipes and /or catalytic converters the software for step 3 must be used. If you do not have this we do not recommend exchanging down pipes/catalytic converters.
We would also like to warn against installing a bigger down pipe/catalytic converter in combination with Step 1 software. This can cause several functionality problems and error indication in the ECU. This can result in system reverse where the system tries to lower the boost pressure to the original levels.
A golden rule for all tuning: ALWAYS COMBINE THE CORRECT COMPONENTS WITH THE CORRECT SOFTWARE.
Wrong combinations will result in impaired functionality and engine damages.
If you have purchased tuning programs from BSR earlier and Step 3 is available for your car, the upgrade cost for the software is only SEK 1500.

Top speed - Will top speed increase after tuning?Top speed will increase slightly on most vehicles due to increased engine power thanks to the chip tuning.
For cars with speed control/most modern cars we have moved this electronic block control up to allow higher top speeds when driving abroad.
It is important to ensure that tires, brakes and other road holding equipment are adequate for higher speeds. This is the responsibility of the car-owner and the driver.

Tuned car - Can I check if a car has been tuned by BSR?If you have copy of a delivery note or an invoice we will be able to inform you about parts included in the item number.
The best way to find information is from previous owners since the vehicle can have been altered after it was tuned by BSR.
[ direct link ]
Tuning - Is there a tuning kit available for my car?We can offer tuning kits for a large number of cars in several steps.
For more information look for your car on www.bsrab.se and find your engine and the year of your car.
Further queries are always welcome.
[ direct link ]
Upgrade – From Step 1 to Step 2 or Step 3The same program can be used for Step 1 and Step 2. If you have Step 1 and install a full flow exhaust system you will have Step 2.
For upgrade to Step 3 a software exchange is required. Software upgrade from Step 1 to Step 3 costs SEK 1 500 (including PPC), with additional costs for down pipe for exhaust system etc.

Service - Can my garage & mechanic tell that my car has been tuned? If a BSR software is installed in the car this will show up when the garage performs a diagnosis (where this is possible). Our ambition and recommendation is to clearly declare that the vechicle is equipped with BSR software.
Most ECU's reveal how many times they have been reloaded, but this can vary, depending on version and diagnosis equipment used.
However, most dealer's garages do not check this.
[ direct link ]
Transmission – tuning effects on manual and automatic? The ECU operates after the same parameters whether the transmission is manual or automatic. The automatic transmission "tells" the engine system how much torque is required for each situation.
In general BSR tunings for cars with automatic transmission has approximately 10-30 Nm lower torque than the corresponding type with a manual transmission.
Vehicles equipped with torque limitation can only reach full torque in third gear and over.
[ direct link ]
Transmission - Is the gearbox durable enough for a BSR tuning? For the cars where BSR tuning kits are available we have ensured that the transmission is durable and strong enough for the power and torque increase.
BSR tunings have suitable torque/moment limitations positioned in different gears/steps.
For this reason it is a good idea to avoid tuning systems that gives the same power/torque increase for all gears and steps.
[ direct link ]
Transmission - Tuning for manual or automaticBSR's tuning programs are specially adapted for each type of transmission (gearbox), for automatic as well as for manual to ensure durability and best performance (acceleration) and drivability.
Automatic transmission control (geartronic, tiptronic etc) is executed by a special control unit programmed in a certain way that also works with the ECU, resulting in some differences/improvements between tuning and the original when shifting gears.

Reset to original conditionIf your car has a PPC it is quick and easy to reset the system. Follow the PPC hand book.
For BSR tuning systems without PPC you have to contact your BSR retail dealer to make an appointment to reset the system. The cost for this is approximately SEK 1 500, depending on type of car end ECU.
